I've made the circuit up on a breadboard and it works perfectly. The only issue I have now is that the trigger has to be low to start the timer but high again for it to turn off. With this being the case I've been using a N C pushbutton to interrupt the voltage to the trigger.Active high trigger for 555 in monostable mode

By the way, I tried using the circuit negative triggering as the 555 is designed but the trigger was so sensitive it would trigger by the touch of my finger. I tried a 200 ohm pullup resistor, but my finger could still trigger it.
